I beat Burning Crusade's hardest boss and don't remember it
My account says I cleared Sunwell Plateau and killed Kil'jaeden, the final villain of the whole first expansion. I believe it. I just can't remember doing it, because by the time I did, the game had made it easy.
The hardest raid in The Burning Crusade was Sunwell Plateau, and the boss at the bottom of it was Kil’jaeden, a giant demon lord who was, story-wise, the final villain of the entire first expansion. When it came out in 2008, killing him at level 70 was a genuinely elite thing, something a thin slice of the best guilds in the world managed and most people never touched. My Burning Crusade guild never got close. We came apart in Black Temple, the raid one rung below it, and that was that.
And yet the screenshot up top, straight off my account, shows Sunwell Plateau cleared. Black Temple too, the raid we fell apart in, finished at some later point. I killed Kil’jaeden. The record is plain about it.
Here is the strange part: I have no memory of the fight at all.
So I asked myself the only useful question I had. Did Sunwell feel hard? Was it a big night, a real accomplishment, the kind you carry around? And the honest answer is no. It felt easy. Which means I did not do it in 2008, when it was the top of the mountain. I did it later, in the Wrath years, at level 80, after the game had cranked everyone’s power up a whole tier and quietly turned Sunwell into old, abandoned content you could walk through with a handful of people. The most prestigious boss of an entire expansion, the thing only the best players on the planet beat while it was current, and by the time I got to him he was a formality. A checkmark on the way to something newer.
I cannot even tell you the day. Somewhere in there, on some forgettable night, I wandered into the Sunwell and finished the hardest content the first expansion ever had, and it left so little mark on me that I forgot it happened.
That is the whole machine of a game like this, in one boss. What is impossible this year is trivial the next. The wall you could never climb becomes a thing you stroll past on your way somewhere else. I am a little sad I missed the version of Kil’jaeden that was actually hard. But I also love, more than a little, that the game kept the receipt when I didn’t, so that I can sit here in 2026 and find out, secondhand, that I once killed the devil at the bottom of the world.
