Leaving Very, when Very ended
Almost five years, a new project nearly every year, a lot of IoT, one great trip, and then the company let everyone go.
I was at Very for almost five years, back when it was still “Very Possible” and then later just “Very.” It was the longest I had been anywhere since the grocery store, and it suited me: a new project almost every year, a steady diet of IoT and Bluetooth work, always something new to figure out.
One of the highlights was a work trip to Punta Cana where I met some genuinely amazing people. Some jobs you remember for the code. This one I remember for the rooms full of good engineers.
And then it ended. The company hit the wall and let everyone go, all at once, the way these things seem to happen now. I would love to tell you I saw it coming. I didn’t, not really.
So I took the summer off. I sat with it, rested, let the dust settle, and then found my way to where I am now. An ending like that is jarring, but the summer turned out to be a gift I didn’t know I needed.
