My Roommate is a Cat, which hits close to home
A show told twice over: once from a new cat owner's side, once from the cat's. As a guy who lives alone with a black cat, this one landed for me.
The whole trick of My Roommate is a Cat is that you get both sides of the same story. You watch a stretch of an episode from the owner’s point of view, completely missing what his cat is thinking, and then it rewinds and replays it from the cat’s side. The owner doesn’t really understand how a cat lives, and the cat doesn’t understand him either, and the gap between the two is where all the fun is.
It hits close to home for me. The owner, Subaru, is a guy who lives alone with a female cat named Haru, and Haru is a tuxedo cat, so mostly black. I’m a guy who lives alone with a black cat. So watching a new owner stumble through the trials of a cat settling into a new place, while the cat quietly tries to make sense of this strange human, felt a little like watching my own house.
Hearing it in Japanese was its own kind of fun, too. It’s a quiet, warm little show about two creatures slowly learning to live together, and I was here for all of it.
