Leaving Mercy, and the commute that broke me
A year building patient apps for virtual care, getting to hire friends, and finally admitting the drive was wearing me down.
I spent about a year at a healthcare system, building patient-experience apps for their virtual-care side: telehealth tools meant to make a hard moment a little easier. The work mattered, and that is its own kind of fuel.
One of the best parts was that I got to bring friends along. I hired Padi (again) and Brendan, and there is nothing quite like building something with people you actually like.
The thing that ended it wasn’t the work or the people. It was the commute. I burned out on the drive, plain and simple, and when the chance came to go fully remote, I took it. I have worked remotely ever since and I haven’t looked back.
A year is short, but it pointed me squarely at the way I wanted to work for the rest of my career.
